Senior Center Recreation Specialist

Job Summary:   Performs various duties associated with implementing, and coordinating senior center programs, classes, and activities. Oversee the center in the absence of the Supervisor and drive a 15-passenger van in the absence of the driver.

Supervisory Functions:  Under the general direction of the Senior Center Supervisor, assists with supervision of part time staff, contracted instructors, and volunteers. Responsibilities include assisting in the interviewing process, and training volunteers and instructors, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.

Assist in monitoring and supervising senior center usage by patrons.

Assist in developing, implementing and supervising recreation programs, classes, and activities for senior.

Register and enroll participants for trips, inform participants of trip changes, cancellations, and process refunds according to procedure.

Assist Supervisor in the evaluation of class programs.

Physically adapt senior center for daily recreation usage through movement of equipment, supplies, and apparatus.

Promote the senior center and programs through press releases, newsletters, and presentations, and Pearland in Motion.

Contact local businesses, individuals, and community organizations for program support and participation.

Assist in preparing daily, monthly, weekly, and quarterly reports as needed.

Perform interviews as needed for instructors and volunteers.

Settle disputes between groups or individual patrons regarding use of facilities.

Inform patrons of membership information and available programs.

Monitor for safety and render emergency first aid to injured or stricken patrons.

Inspect and report damage to facilities to appropriate authority.

Assist in van driving duties as required.

Be available for immediate call-in due to any natural or manmade disaster, or any other event the Recreation Superintendent/Director of Parks and Recreation/City Manager may deem necessary.

Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:
Bachelor Degree in Recreational Programming, Organization and Administration of Health, Physical Education/Recreation or a related field, preferred.

One year experience working with the senior population is required.

Municipal Government experience preferred.

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License, required.

First Aid and CPR Certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Ability to operate a Personal Computer, telephone, fax machine, and copier. Occasionally use City or personal vehicle to complete tasks.
