Recreation Specialist - Programs

Job Summary:   Perform various duties associated with implementing and coordinating youth and early childhood programs throughout the City of Pearland Parks and Recreation Department, and developing, implementing and coordinating the Summer Day Camp program.


Supervisory FunctionsUnder the general direction of the Recreation Program Coordinator, assists with supervision of Recreation Attendants and Instructors in the Recreation Division of Parks and Recreation. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training Summer Camp staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.

Develops, implements, markets and supervises recreation programs, classes, and activities for early childhood and youth groups and interests; recruit class instructors, and determines class schedules and fees.

Inform patrons of rules concerning dress, conduct, or equipment and enforce rules; eject unruly or unauthorized persons as necessary.

Order supplies and work within approved budget.

Inspect and report damage to facilities to appropriate authority.

Accurately complete daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports as needed.

Hires, motivates, and evaluates contractual instructors

Investigates and resolves citizen complaints and inquiries regarding programs.

Ensure that accurate program statistics are maintained-such as accident reports, and participation for hours which programs/facilities are managed.

Assist with the distribution, inventory, and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

Maintain customer service standards set by the Department and City.

Supervise, select, hire, mentor, and educate camp staff in a manner that reinforces Pearland Parks and Recreation Department's values and philosophies. Insure the operation of the program division meets city standards and provides an environment of member and guest satisfaction by providing positive leadership for the team on a daily basis.

Adhere to all mandatory standards of operation, policies, procedures, manuals, memos, oral instructions, etc., all of which related to the essential functions of the job.

Assist in the delivery of division services as required, including providing specific services as qualified to do so by training (examples are working the floor, facilitating program activities, etc.)

Conduct oneself at all times in a manner of professionalism that aligns with the values, philosophies and standards or Pearland Parks and Recreation.

Stay abreast of trends in recreation programming and develop new and innovative programs in correlation with community needs and desires.

Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.

Design, organize, schedule and evaluate the summer day camp programs, meet the needs and interests of youth and the camp target market and ensure delivery in a safe and quality manner.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:
Bachelor Degree in Recreational Programming, Organization and Administration of Health, Physical Education/Recreation or a related field, preferred. An Associate Degree may be substituted for the Bachelor Degree requirement with two (2) years prior experience.

Experience in recreational programming preferred.

Municipal Government experience preferred.

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License, required.

First Aid and CPR Certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Ability to operate a Personal Computer, telephone, fax machine, and copier. Occasionally use City or personal vehicle to complete tasks
