Part Time Lifeguard w/WSI
General Statement of Job
Monitors activities and performs services within the pool area to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers and customers. This position also serves as an instructor for the Pearland Learn-to-Swim program. Instructs all swimming lessons based on curriculum established by the American Red Cross. Provides a high level of customer service with a winning attitude. Assists in creating positive experiences for the patrons by ensuring a safe, welcoming and fun environment.
Essential Functions
Regular and timely attendance at work, as scheduled.
Provides exemplary customer service to all facility users including, but not limited to, members, class participants, facility rentals and school district and club athletes and coaches.
Instruct classes in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
Maintain control of classes and insuring the classes are safe at all times.
Prepare materials for the Learn to swim program including certificates, course checklist, Red Cross course records, teaching aids and supplies.
Provide guidance to assist in the training of any Water Safety Aides assigned to their classes.
Interact with supervisory, pool management, and lifeguard staff.
Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe use of the pool.
Actively monitors for swimmers in distress.
Assists and/or rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and CPR.
Maintains order in swimming areas by enforcing facility rules and regulations.
Acts as kiosk attendant or cashier when necessary.
Inserts and removes lane lines as needed.
Performs daily maintenance functions of cleaning deck, restrooms, grounds and building, etc.
Determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit and logs information appropriately.
Immediately reports safety related issues such as unsafe equipment within the facility, chemical spills, etc.
Participates in required in-service trainings and other meetings.
Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses
Minimum age for consideration is 16 years of age.
Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding required, or the ability to obtain within one (1) month of hire date.
Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is required prior to start of work.
Requirement for pre-interview swimming test:
1. Swim 300 yards continuously using only the front crawl or breaststroke.
2. Swim 20-25 yards, submerge to 7-10 feet of depth, retrieve a 10 lbs. weight, and return to the starting point while holding the weight with both hands. There is a time limit of 100 seconds to complete this test.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as short correspondence, memos; safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write simple correspondence; routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to deal with and carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Ability to operate a backboard, rescue tubes, first aid supplies, cash register, concessions equipment, lane lines, time clock, cleaning supplies, water testing kit, Learn to Swim materials, instructional aides such as kickboards and barbells, certificates, parent handbooks, office equipment, pc, personal vehicle to perform City business.
Ability to learn and adapt to new situations.
Ability to problem solve as needed.
Ability to communicate clearly and in a positive manner to internal and external clients.
Skill in applying emergency aid and lifesaving measures; skill in water rescue methods; skill in swimming.
Ability to remain calm under stress; ability to monitor vital signs of an individual; ability to accurately see objects at a distance; ability to verbally communicate in an effective and professional manner with the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Ability to work mornings, days, evenings and/or weekends as required.
Must have reliable transportation to, from, and between job sites.
Knowledge of water safety techniques, lifesaving and rescue methods; knowledge of first-aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods.
Knowledge of the methods, chemicals, tools, and equipment used in the operation, and maintenance of public swimming pool facilities; knowledge of pool use and policies and regulations.
