Parks Crew Leader - Tree Crew
Job Summary: Monitors, leads, and participates with assigned crew in the day-to-day maintenance of grounds for City of Pearland property including city parks, City Hall, Library, and Gazebo. Ensures that parks are safe for community.
Supervisory Functions:
Leads the work activities of assigned crew in Parks Maintenance. Carries out crew leader responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.
Directs the work activities of assigned subordinate personnel; schedules and reviews the work activities of assigned crew; performs activities of workers supervised.
Inspects and maintains assigned equipment; maintains daily work orders and prepares daily work reports.
Performs and directs turf maintenance activities such as mowing, weeding, edging, aerifying, fertilizing, and applying of herbicides and pesticides.
Inspects, installs, repairs, constructs, renovates, and maintains parks and facilities and equipment; performs minor carpentry, plumbing, and painting work.
Ensure that worksite is properly secured according to safety standards by setting up barricades in and around site.
Assists with preparation for special projects or events, such as setting up chairs, tables, and signs; construction of booths or other display areas; cleaning up after events.
Interprets policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
Responsible for reporting work hours to Parks and Recreation Office Coordinator to ensure accurate payment to employees for hours worked.
Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
Serves as "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the Park Superintendent, the Director of Parks and Recreation and/or City Manager deem necessary.
Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
One (1) year related experience in park, landscape maintenance, and/or facility maintenance.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to operate a City vehicle for business use, mower, trailer, tractor, lifts, back hoe, shovel, rake, hoe, edger, saw, blower, hammer, axe, pick, lopper, chain saw, and various of tools.
Skill in driving light trucks and equipment.
Skill in the use and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in landscaping and grounds and facility maintenance.
Ability to lead the work activities of subordinate employees.
Ability to follow and give oral and written directions and instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to communicate in an effective manner.
Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of landscaping and maintenance.
Knowledge of equipment and procedures used in the application of pesticides.
Knowledge of park and athletic field maintenance operations.
Knowledge of minor carpentry, plumbing and of painting methods.
Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
Knowledge of methods of routine lawn and plant care.
