Aquatic Supervisor
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Recreation Center and Natatorium Manager, the Aquatic Supervisor (AS) supervises the operations and maintenance of the Pearland Natatorium. The AS mentors the Aquatic Specialist in supervision of part-time Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors. The AS advises the Recreation Center and Natatorium Manager in budget decisions and provides budget support for the Natatorium. The AS also coordinates all rentals and events within the Natatorium and manages the contracted management company for the Independence Park outdoor pool.
Supervisory Functions: Supervises Natatorium staff including a full-time Aquatic Specialist, Head Guards, Lifeguards, and Water Safety Instructors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.
Manage the daily use and special events of the Natatorium by department staff, schools, military, community organizations, and clubs.
Manage and conduct filtration system operations, maintenance and repairs; operate maintenance equipment such as portable vacuums, pressure washers and other various equipment, swim meet timing systems and operations, sound system and various training aids.
Research and endeavor to obtain various forms of revenue for the Natatorium.
Coordinate the requisition and order supplies, chemicals, and equipment for the Natatorium.
Draft rental agreements.
Oversee the use and management of the PPARD Independence Park Pool contract.
Work with the Pearland Independent School District Athletic Director and Swim coaches to coordinate pool practices, swim meets, and other school-related activities.
Supervise the training of lifeguards on policies, procedures, equipment, and methods of safe and efficient operations.
Support budget priorities, create proposals, performance measures, and reports.
Follow up on accidents and incidents; prepare subsequent reports and make recommendations for improvement. Keep accurate records of all reports.
Evaluate participant needs and interests and make recommendation.
Respond to customer and public inquiries, concerns and complaints.
Review the Aquatic Specialist's recommendations of all activities associated with the Natatorium operations and make improvements.
Set present, short-term, and long-range strategic planning efforts for the Natatorium.
Teach appropriate lifeguard training, WSI, CPR, AED and first aid courses to both the public and PPARD employees.
Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
Set up swim and dive meets, water polo tournaments and other special events in the Natatorium.
Set up and have working knowledge of Daktronics Timing system as well as a general knowledge of Meet Manager.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
Bachelor Degree in Recreational Programming, Organization and Administration of Health, Physical Education/Recreation or a related field required.
Three (3) years related experience demonstrating a proven history of coordinating youth and adult athletic/aquatic/recreation programs, including one (1) year of supervisory experience in an aquatic environment; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
Prior experience with school districts, preferred.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in facility management required. Aquatic facility management experience preferred.
Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator required (or obtain within the first six (6) months of hire.)
Blood Borne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Lifeguard Instructor Teacher, Water Safety Instructor Teacher, CPRP (Certified Parks and Recreation Professional) preferred.
Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License, required.
Municipal Government experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Experience with budget processes preferred.
City vehicle for business use, PC, printer, telephone, copier, fax machine, 10-Key, and a variety of sporting equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees and the public.
Ability to present a positive image of the City at all times.
Ability to fulfill requests or otherwise provide services, accurate information or assistance in a courteous and timely manner without complaining.
Ability to actively listen and demonstrate competence and interest to the general public, citizens, and co-workers.
Knowledge of the principles and philosophy of community recreation and leisure.
