Job Summary:  Performs a variety of installation, preventative, and corrective maintenance tasks to the electrical systems and equipment of City-owned buildings to maintain their appearance, effective operation, and safe operation, and other City objectives to provide a safe, clean and productive environment for employees and the general public.


Essential Functions

  • Regular and timely attendance at work. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance on electrical systems and equipment. 
  • Order materials and supplies to perform maintenance activities. 
  • Perform corrective repairs on electrical systems and equipment. 
  • Accurately completes documentation as directed and needed. 
  • Performance preventative and corrective maintenance on various building systems. 
  • Installs electrical circuits and components as needed and directed according to code in a safe manner. 
  • Read blueprints, diagrams, and schematic drawings to diagnose and make repairs. 
  • Installation and testing of electrical components and wiring. 
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area. 
  • Installs and maintains a variety of electrical equipment such as control panels, breakers, relays, switches, ballasts, and fuses. 
  • Replaces and rewires electrical motors.
  • Safely uses hand and power tools associated with electrical installation and maintenance. 
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs conduit using bending and threading tools. 
  • Observes the function of electrical equipment to detect hazards, and need to adjust, relocate or replace. 
  • Maintains technical competence by attending classes and meetings as required to maintain license, skills and knowledge. 
  • Able and willing to participate in Facilities emergency on call rotation. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
  • Serve as "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or manmade disaster, or any other event the Director of Parks and Recreation, Assistant City Manager, or the City Manager deem necessary.
  • Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.


Education, Experience, and Licenses

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Licensed Journeyman Electrician in the state of Texas. 
  • Completion of a Certificate in Technology in electrical systems maintenance, or graduation from a multi-year apprenticeship program as a Journeyman Electrician. 
  • Five (5) years experience working as a Journeyman Electrician in commercial or industrial environments. 
  • Associates Degree in Technology preferred. 
  • Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the education and experience requirements. 
  • Valid, class "C" Texas Driver's License.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence. 
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide four digit numbers. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, area and distance. 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Basic typing and word processing skills to record data and make required reports. 
  • Ability to operate a multimeter, ammeter, and other equipment as needed for electrical troubleshooting. 
  • Full knowledge and understanding of applicable electrical codes. 
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. 
  • Ability to organize data and develop filing and record keeping systems. 
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English and the ability to follow oral and written directions. 
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people. 
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to read and understand bulletins, regulations, rule books, manufacturer manuals, directions, and work instructions in English. 
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools associated with electrical maintenance. 
  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematic drawings to diagnose and make repairs. 
  • Ability to research and understand Electrical code. 
  • Ability to write and speak English proficiently to communicate with customers, read directions, labels, diagrams, and effectively understand and follow safe work practices.
