Job Summary:    The Field Service Technician (Meter Reader) completes meter reading duties, work orders related to water meter maintenance, field service, and meter turn on and turn off. This position performs maintenance on meter reading devices, which include exchange of faulty and/or non-functioning meters, location of meters, and reporting of needed line repairs to the Service Center.

Essential Functions:
Conduct and operate drive-by meter reading process with meter reading equipment. Ensure that all meter reading is completed as scheduled to ensure billing schedules meet City Code requirements.

Perform maintenance and inspections on meters and meter reading devices, locate meters, clean out meter boxes, run accuracy tests, repair and maintenance meters, and exchange faulty and/or non-functional meters or registers.

Record information related to maintenance of meter reading devices and meters such as accuracy test results.

Maintain inventory and process service/maintenance order requests either manually or input into a computer.

Report needed line repairs to the City's Service Center.

Follow up with customers and other employees. Record customer complaints, including detailed records of events to the Supervisor.

Interact with customers periodically with regard to meter reading inquiries and/or general meter reading functions.

Change curb stops as necessary.

Assist office personnel as necessary.

Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:
High school diploma or equivalent required

Minimum one (1) year of related experience and/or training in water production, plumbing, or construction.

Ability to obtain Class D water license issued by TCEQ within first year of employment; Class C water license preferred.

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Position requires effective oral and written communication skills.

Ability to write simple correspondence and the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, including other employees of the organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to perform multiple tasks.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of data entry database software, use of computer equipment and peripheral equipment.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use effectively, a writing instrument, small hand tools, a meter scope, a meter pump, a handheld reading radio, wrench, saw, pliers, screw driver, and drive a motor vehicle. Must be able to operate a weed eater, shovel, sharpshooter, a telephone, and a handheld radio.
